      <description>Neighborhood Advisory

Air Conditioner thefts- 4TH Precinct

February 2, 2012

Facts:

The 4th Precinct continues to experience an increase in the theft and damage of central air conditioning units from homes. The recyclable materials from the central air conditioning units are then sold.

The Minneapolis Police Department is asking everyone in the 4TH Precinct to be particularly alert to suspicious activities outside of homes and to use sound burglary and theft prevention practices.

During the past month there were five more damage to central air conditioning units reported.

Date Time Location CCN

What you can do:

Please be alert to strangers loitering outside of homes, lurking in alleys, near garages especially if the home is vacant.

Call the 4TH Precinct Property Crimes Unit at (612) 673-5714 if you have any information about stolen or vandalized air conditioning units.

If possible cover your unit with wrappings that are specifically for outdoor air conditioning units and are nominally priced and available at local hardware stores and discount warehouses. Some even come with secure locking devices.

Light up the area around your air conditioning unit, from dusk to dawn.

Alert your neighbors and block club members to the problem and be sure to watch out for each other. Remember the majority of burglars are caught because someone reported suspicious behavior immediately.

Pay attention to suspicious vehicles circling the block with occupants you don't recognize.

Contact your Crime Prevention Specialist for tips, information and

other resources to keep your property and your home safe; or to

have a free home security audit. Call 673-5704 and ask to speak to a Crime Prevention Specialist
